Open Class Flower Show

All classes are open to any amateur gardener in Madison and adjoining counties

Entry Information:

  1. Entry paper work may be done in person or by mail. Entries close June 30 - no exceptions. Classes may be changed day of show, but no new entries will be accepted.
    In Person: at the Secretary's office - see Secretary Hours
    Mail: Use entry blank found in center of book or link above.
    • Mail must be received by mail delivery on Wednesday June 30, 2010
    • Each exhibitor must purchase a Season or Daily Admission Ticket.
    • Entry Fee: $1.00 for each item entered
    • Exhibitors may enter as many classes as they desire. Changes to classes the exhibitor has entered may be made up to 10:00am day of show but no new entries may be made at that time.
    • NO EARLY RELEASES - Failure to leave on display may result in forfeiture of premiums and loss of privilege for next year's fair. All exhibits may be picked up at 12:00 noon on Wednesday July 14, 2010 at which time they will be removed by the exhibitor
  2. BRINGING ENTRIES:
    Specimens must be in place by 1:00 pm Sunday July 11, 2010. All exhibits are to remain in place until noon on Wednesday July 14, 2010, at which time they will be removed by the exhibitor
  3. HORTICULTURE:
    All Horticulture class entries must have been grown by th exhibitor. Exhibitors are to place cut horticulture exhibits in clear glass containers.
  4. POTTED PLANTS:
    Potted plants must have been in the exhibitor's possession for 60 days or more. Use of artificial leaf shine is not permitted on any exhibit.
  5. ARTISTIC:
    Plant material may be secured from any source. All plant material used in the artistic design is to be listed on a 3x5 inch card. All designs must contain some fresh material. Accessories, bases, mats and foliages are permitted in all classes. Painted materials permitted in all classes. Artificial plant material and painted or dyed live flowers are not permitted in any class.
  6. JUDGING:
    The horticulture class of roses will be judged beginning at 2:00 pm followed by Junior Horticulture and Junior Artistic. Judging will then proceed to Senior Artistic. Another judge may be present and will continue to judge Senior Horticulture. Oral judging, using the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs (OAGC) standard system, is open to the public. Decision of the Judge is final. NOTE: Junior Artistic must be made on site the day of the judging.
  7. All entries will be exhibited at the risk of the exhibitor, although every effort will bw made to protect exhibits
  8. In classes where no competition exists, or if, in the opinion of the judge, articles exhibited are not worthy of a first place award, the judge may award a second place award or no award
  9. Any questions or suggestions should be directed to those in charge of the Exhibit Hall
  10. Exhibitors may make entries in as many classes as desired. An exhibitor may enter 3 in each Horticulture Class, provided each entry is a differnt color or variety. In the Artistic Section, the exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired but may enter only one to a class. No one entry may be exhibited in more than one contest
  11. Rules for exhibiting are the same as for Garden Club Flower Show. Garden club members will be in charge of staging, placing ribbons and stapling ribbons. The same flower cannot compete for more than one premium.
  12. A Rosette will be awarded for Best of Show Artistic Design, Award of Merit for the best cut specimen and a Best of Show in Junior Artistic, if exhibit warrants

Madison County Garden Clubs Flower Show

Thursday July 15, 2010 - Noon

Located in the Community Building (formerly Floral Hall)

GENERAL RULES:
All horticulture specimens are to be in place not later than 11:00am Thursday July 15, 2010. All arrangements are to be in place no later than 11:30am. All exhibits may be picked up at 5:00pm on Saturday July 17, 2010. All exhibitors are asked to put their names on the entry tag. All exhibits will be staged on tables with a depth of 24 inches. The horticulture class of roses will be judged beginning at 12:00 noon followed with the Harvested Vegetable Basket, continuing with the Junior Horticulture and Junior Artistic. Judging will then proceed to Senior Artistic. Oral judging of the remaining horticulture classes will follow the artistic section using the OAGC standard system. Oral judging is open to the public. The decision of the judge is final.

**BUILDING WILL BE CLOSED TO ALL EXCEPT FLOWER EXHIBITORS UNTIL JUDGING BEGINS AT 12:00 NOON**

HORTICULTURE RULES:

Accessories, bases, mats, and foliages are permitted in all classes. Painted materials permitted in all classes. Artificial plant material and painted or dyed live flowers are not permitted in any classes. Lights that are battery operated may be used.

AWARDS:
An award of $9.00 will be given to the club with the highest number of Blue Ribbons; $4.00 to the club receiving the next highest. The most points earned by Garden Club in Madison County:
1st - $100.00; 2nd - $90.00; 3rd - $80.00; 4th - $70.00.

  • 10 points for artistic best of show
  • 5 points for each 1st place ribbon
  • 4 points for each 2nd place ribbon
  • 3 points for each 3rd place ribbon
  • 2 points for each 4th place ribbon
  • 1 point for each 5th place ribbon

A Best of Show Award for Artistic Achievement in memory of Harold Weeks; An Award of Merit in Horticulture (specimens) given by Madison County Garden Clubs; and a "Best of Show" Rosette will be awarded in the Junior Artistic division if exhibits warrant.

RULES GOVERNING SHOW

  1. All Exhibitors entering will be charged an entry fee of $5.00
  2. Competition open to the world
  3. ENTRIES CLOSE JUNE 30. NO EXCEPTIONS. Commentaries forms may be sent by mail to: Fair Secretary, PO Box 30, London, Ohio 43140
  4. Entrant to participate in these classes must have a sheep background or sheep interest
  5. Sheep must be conditioned and trained to show at halter
  6. No decoration on sheep or halter except sheep in Decorative Classes
  7. Exhibitor may participate in two classes if a different outfit is worn
  8. The entrants will be judged with respect to garment selected, poise, and appearance, control and presentation of the animal, and garment construction and originality
  9. Garments must be made from fabric consisting of at least 50% American Wool
  10. Health certificates will be required for out-of-state animals. Any animals showing signs of sickness or disease will require vet certification before showing. All sheep MUST be properly tagged with a USDA Scrapies approved tag prior to unloading on check-in day.
  11. All bedding must be furnished by the exhibitors. Only shavings, mulch, sawdust, carpet and corn cobs is permitted to be used for bedding. NO STRAW, SAND OR NEWSPAPER WILL BE ALLOWED.
  12. Show superintendent may split or add to a class after the number of entries have been determined
  13. Classes will be divided by age of Exhibitor as of Jan 1, 2010

Lamb & Wool Princess Contest

Winner crowned during Guys & Gals Lead Show

DETAILS

  1. Entrants must write an essay on "Why I would like to be the Lamb and Wool Princess." ENTRIES ARE DUE on JUNE 30, 2010. Entries may be taken in person to the Fair Secretary's Office in the east end of the Jr Fair quonset or mailed to: Fair Secretary, PO Box 30, London, Ohio 43140.
    *NOTE: Late entries will not be accepted
  2. Qualifications:
    • The Princess must be a Madison County Junior Fair Exhibitor between the ages of 11 & 14 years of age, as of January 1, 2010.
    • Have a sheep interest
    • Must exhibit in the Guys & Gals Lead Contest
  3. The Princess will receive a crown and $25.00 cash. They will promote the lamb and wool industry during the year.

GENERAL RULES APPLYING TO BOTH CONTESTS

  1. All animals must be ear notched or ear tagged for identification
  2. $5.00 entry fee per animal - per class. All exhibitors must purchase a Season, Student, Daily Admission or Madison County Junior Fair pass.
  3. All swine must have been farrowed after December 15, 2009
  4. A 1st and 2nd place Jr Fair Market Barrow and Market Gilt will be chosen. The Open Class Grant and Reserve Market Barrow / Market Gilt are selected first.
  5. The Madison County Market Barrows/Gilts entered in open class shows must be shown by the exhibitor and have a Madison County Jr Fair ID tag to be eligible for the Madison County Jr Fair Market Barrow/Gilt Award.
  6. All out-of-state swine must show proof of negative Pseudorabies test within 45 days of show
  7. Judge will disqualify barrows showing evidence of late castration.
  8. Exhibitors must refrain from the use of any injected medication on animals at the fair.
  9. All bedding must be furnished by the exhibitors. Only shavings, mulch, sawdust, carpet and corn cobs are permitted to be used for bedding. NO STRAW, SAND OR NEWSPAPER WILL BE ALLOWED
  10. ANY PERSON USING ELECTRIC FANS ON THE FAIRGROUNDS IS REQUIRED TO USE ONLY GROUNDED EQUIPMENT WITH THREE-PRONG PLUGS. INAPPROPRIATE EXTENSION CORDS AND ADAPTERS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

    3. All bedding must be furnished by exhibitor. Cattle being shown ONLY in the Open Class Supreme Show may use STRAW bedding. Jr Fair exhibitors must use shavings, mulch, sawdust, carpet and corn cob bedding only.
    4. Classes open to all residents of the state of Ohio.
    5. OPEN ENTRIES CLOSE JUNE 30, 2010 - NO EXCEPTIONS.

    RULES GOVERNING SHOW

    1. Health certificates will be required for out-of-state animals only. Any animal showing signs of sickness or disease will require immediate vet certification before showing. All sheep MUST be properly tagged with a USDA Scrapies approved tag prior to unloading on check-in day.
    2. All bedding must be furnished by the exhibitors. Only shavings, mulch, sawdust, carpet and corn cobs are permitted to be used for bedding. NO STRAW, SAND OR NEWSPAPERS WILL BE ALLOWED.
    3. All Exhibitors will be charged $5.00 for each entry in a class. LIMIT OF 2 ENTRIES PER CLASS. Limit 2 premiums per exhibitor per class if there are other exhibitors entered. If only one exhibitor is in a class then only ONE premium will be paid.
    4. All Exhibitors must purchase Season or Daily Exhibitor Ticket. EXCEPTION: Madison County Jr Fair Members show Jr Fair Pass.
    5. Sheep must arrive the morning of Sunday July 11, 2010.

    8. All entries from flocks known to have been affected with or exposed to any contagious or infectious disease within the past year shall be accompanied by a certificate signed by a regularly employed state or federal veterinarian.
    9. The management further reserves the right to take any additional measures that may be deemed necessary to protect the health of sheep shown at the fair.
    10. ANY EXHIBITOR USING ELECTRIC FANS ON THE FAIRGROUNDS IS REQUIRED TO USE ONLY GROUNDED EQUIPMENT WITH THREE PRONG PLUGS. INAPPROPRIATE EXTENSION CORDS AND ADAPTERS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

    6. No blankets allowed on sheep during weigh-ins. Weigh-in will be from 10:00am - 11:00am.
    7. Class winners are subject to being weighed.
    8. Only shavings, mulch, sawdust, carpet and corn cobs are permitted to be used for bedding. NO STRAW, SAND OR NEWSPAPER WILL BE ALLOWED.

    2. All Exhibitors entering will be charged $5.00 per goat. All Exhibitors must purchase Season or Daily Exhibitor Ticket.
    3. Market Goat exhibitors must arrive before noon on Sunday July 11, 2010

    1. Check-in will be from 10:00-1:00pm Sunday July 11, 2010.
    2. Registration papers will be required for purebred cattle.
    3. Breed classes will be formed for heifer and steer classes ONLY if there are three or more of the same breed. If there are not enough purebred cattle to form a breed class, purebred cattle will show in crossbred class. Or, in an All Other Breed class if there are three or more various purebred cattle that lack the numbers to form their own breed show.
    4. All out-of-state cattle will require health papers.
    5. Heifers must be born after September 1, 2008.
    6. All cattle will be shown by hip height unless a breed class is formed.
    7. Class order: County Born and Raised, Feeders, Heifers and Steers.
    8. Exhibitors must pay daily admission in addition to entry fee.
    9. Class money as follows: Feeders 1st - $15; 2nd - $12; 3rd - $10;
      Steers and Heifers: 1st - $25; 2nd - $22; 3rd - $20.
    10. Feeders must be born after January 1, 2010.
    11. Exhibitors must provide their own bedding of wood chips or mulch.


     

    Madison County Born & Raised Show

    Sunday July 11, 2010 - 4:00 PM

    For the seventh year, the Madison County Born and Raised Class has been added to the 2010 Beef Open Show. The object is to recognize county youth for producing quality market and breeding projects. There is no charge for these classes, however participants need to register in the senior fair office by Saturday July 11, 2009. This will be the first class during the Open Class Beef Show on Sunday July 11, 2010 beginning at 4:00pm. An overall Champion Born and Raised Market Beef Animal, Champion Born and Raised Heifer, and Champion Born and Raised Feeder Calf will be selected. Various awards will be given to participants. This continues to be a pilot program and hopefully this program will grow in future years. Future input and changes are welcomed.

    RULES

    1. All animals must be current 4-H or FFA projects entered at this year's fair and the animal must have been born and raised in Madison County. If you bought the animal from a breeder within Madison County and raised it, the animal is eligible for the show.
    2. Classes will be determined by show management.

    All Canned Goods must be canned using methods approved by The Ohio State University. Each entry is required to have on it the method of preservation and number of minutes it was processed. Jars will remain unopened with THE RIGHT RESERVED to open it if there is a question as to preservative or proper cooking or the age of contents.

    All fruits, vegetables, james, jellies and preserves must be canned in a standard jar.

    Canned Goods are to be taken to the Grange/Art Hall on: Sunday July 11, 2010 between 11:30am and 1:30pm.

    Additional Information

    1. All entries must be on mat board or framed, and read to hang (if hangable).
    2. All articles will be exhibited at the risk of the exhibitor. Every effort will be made to protect exhibits.
    3. All entries must be the work of the exhibitor AS FAR AS DESIGN AND COMPOSITION (work must be unique to the artist). Entry must not have been exhibited at Madison County Fair within the past five (5) years. Violation of this rule will be determined by Madison County Fairboard and judge(s). All decision will be final.
    4. ANY IDENTIFICATION on the entry is to be covered until after judging.
    5. NO COMPUTER ART.

    Additional Information
    Tole and Decorative Painting is defined as a method of painting of designs on any object to decorate or making a picture. Method is defined as regular, orderly, definite procedure or way of teaching or learning.

    1. All articles will be exhibited at the risk of the exhibitor. Every effort will be made to protect exhibits.
    2. In classes where no competition exists, or if in the opinion of the judge, articles exhibited are not worthy of a First Award, the judge may award a Second or No Award.
    3. PICTURES ARE TO BE READY TO HANG. Sturdy wire must be used on all pictures.
    4. Any signature or identification on entry must be covered until after judging.
    5. All classifications may be done on any surface.

    1. All grain entries require one quart samples.
    2. All entries shall be grown by the exhibitors.
