2008 Open Classes
Sunday July 6, 2008 - 2:00 PM Located in Floral Exhibit Hall All classes are open to any amateur gardener in Madison & adjoining counties. Entry Information: Entry Form >>> 1. Entry paperwork may be done by mail prior to bringing in exhibits or up until 10:00 am day of show.

4. All entries will be exhibited at the risk of the exhibitor, although every effort will be made to protect exhibits. 5. In classes where no competition exists, or if, in the opinion of the judge, articles exhibited are not worthy of a first place award, the judge may award a second place award or no award. 6. Any questions or suggestions should be directed to those in charge of the Exhibit Hall. 7. Exhibitors may make entries in as many classes as desired. No one entry may be exhibited in more than one contest. 8. Rules for exhibiting are the same as for Garden Club Flower Show. Garden club members will be in charge of staging, placing ribbons and stapling ribbons. The same flower cannot compete for more than one premium. An exhibitor may enter 3 in each Horticulture Class, provided each entry is a different color or variety. In the Artistic Section, the exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired but may enter only one to a class. Plant material for the artistic designs may be secured from any source. 9. Potted Plants: Potted plants must have been in the exhibitor's possession for 60 days or more. Use of artificial leaf shine is not permitted on any exhibit. If warranted, classes will be subdivided. 10. Margaret Robert's Sweepstakes Award will be given in Horticulture Division. Points figured as follows: 1st - 5 points; 2nd - 3 points; 3rd - 1 point.
11. Best of Show Award for Artistic Design. Award of Merit for the best cut
specimen will be provided by Madison County Garden Clubs. A "Best of Show"
Rosette will be awarded in Junior Artistic if exhibit warrants.

Thursday July 10, 2008 - 12:00 PM Located in the Floral Exhibit Hall
All horticulture specimens are to be in place not later than 11:00 am Thursday, July 10, 2008. All arrangements are to be in place not later than 12:00 noon. All exhibits may be picked up at 6:00 pm on Saturday, July 12, 2008. All exhibitors are asked to put their names on the entry tag. All exhibits will be staged on tables with a depth of 24". The horticulture class of roses will be judged beginning at 12:00 noon followed by Junior Horticulture and Junior Artistic. Judging will then proceed to Senior Artistic. Oral judging of the remaining horticulture classes will follow the artistic section using the OAGC standard system. Oral judging is open to the public. The decision of the judge is final. ** Building will be closed to all except flower exhibitors until judging begins at 12:00 noon. ** Horticulture Rules: All Horticulture class entries must have been grown by the exhibitor. Exhibitors are to place curt horticulture exhibits in clear glass containers. Potted Plants: Potted plants must have been in the exhibitor's possession for 60 days or more. Use of artificial leaf shine is not permitted on any exhibit. If warranted, classes will be subdivided. Artistic Rules: Plant materials may be secured from any source. All plant material used in the artistic design is to be listed on a 3"x5" card. All designs must contain some fresh material. Accessories, bases, mats and foliages are permitted in all classes. Painted materials permitted in all classes. Artificial plant material and painted or dyed live flowers are not permitted in any classes. Lights that are battery operated may be used. Awards: An award of $9.00 will be given to the club with the highest number of Blue ribbons; $4.00 to the club receiving the next highest. The most points earned by a Garden Club in Madison county: 1st - $90.00; 2nd - $80.00; 3rd - $70.00; 4th - $60.00; 5th - $50.00.
Myrtle Thompson Award will be awarded to the outstanding house plant; A Best of Show Award for Artistic Achievement in memory of Harold Weeks. An Award of Merit in Horticulture (specimens) given by Madison County Garden Clubs. Thursday July 10, 2008 - 6:00 PM Show held inside Arena
1. All Exhibitors entering will be charged an entry fee of $5.00. 2. competition open to the world. 3. Entries close Saturday, July 5, 2008. No Exceptions.
4. Entrant to participate in these classes must have a sheep background or sheep interest. 5. Sheep must be conditioned and trained to show at halter. 6. No decoration on sheep or halter except sheep in Decorative Classes. 7. Exhibitor may only participate in one class. 8. The entrants will be judged with respect to garment selected, poise, and appearance, control and presentation of the animal, and garment construction and originality. 9. Garments must be made from fabric consisting of at least 50% American Wool. 10. Health certificates will be required for out-of-state animals. Any animal showing signs of sickness or disease will require vet certification before showing. All sheep must be properly tagged with a USDA Scrapies approved tag prior to unloading on check-in day. 11. All bedding must be furnished by the exhibitors. Only shavings, mulch, saw dust, carpet and corn cobs is permitted to be used for bedding. No straw, sand or newspaper will be allowed. 12. General Rules Applying to both Contests: 1. All animals must be ear notched or ear tagged for identification. 2. $5.00 entry fee per animal - per class. All exhibitors must purchase a Season, Student, Daily Admission or Madison County Junior Fair pass. 3. All swine must have been farrowed after December 15, 2007. 4. All out-of-state swine must show proof of negative Pseudorabies test within 45 dayus of show. 5. Judge will disqualify barrows showing evidence of late castration. 6. Exhibitors must refrain from the use of any injected medication on animals at the fair. 7. All bedding must be furnished by the exhibitors. Only shavings, mulch, sawdust, carpet and corn cobs are permitted to be used for bedding. No straw, sand or newspaper will be allowed. 8. Any person using electric fans on the fairgrounds is required to use only grounded equipment with three-prong plugs. Inappropriate extension cords and adapters are not acceptable. New for 2008 Open Class Market Barrow and Market Gild Show 1. There will be a First and Second Place Madison Count Jr Fair Market Barrow and Market Gilt chosen in the Open Class Swine Show. 2. No entry fee will be charged for Madison County Junior Fair entrants in the market shows BUT entries must be made and received in the Sr Fair Office by 9:00 pm on Saturday, July 5, 2008. Entry fee for showmanship remains unchanged. There will be no exceptions. 5. The open class market barrow and market gilt shows will proceed according to schedule. 6. After each weight class is placed by the judge, the first and second (if applicable) Madison County Jr Fair animal will also be selected. 7. After the Open Class Grand and Reserve Market Barrow / Market Gilt are chosen, the First Place Madison County Junior Fair animals will be brought back in to select the First Place Madison County Junior Fair Market Barrow / Market Gilt. The second place animals will be on deck and the second place animal in the weight class that the first place animal came from will then participate in the choosing of the Second Place Madison County Junior Fair Market Barrow / Market Gilt. 8. The First Place Madison County Junior Fair Market Barrow / Market Gilt projects will receive $100 and a banner; the Second Place Madison County Junior Fair Market Barrow / Market Gilt projects will receive $50 and a banner.

All dairy cattle breeds will compete against all other dairy cattle breeds in every class as a Supreme Competition in the Open Class Dairy Show. 4. All bedding must be furnished by exhibitor. Open entries close Saturday, July 5. Jr Entries close Saturday, July 5. Must have valid 2008 Madison Country Jr Fair Pass to be eligible. 1. Cattle may arrive after 6:00 pm Friday July, 11, 2008. 2. Check-in will be from 8:00-10:00 am Saturday July 12, 2008. 3. Registration papers will be required for purebred cattle. 4. Breed classes will be formed for heifer and steer classes only ir>ere are three or more of the same breed. If there are not enough purebred cattle to form a breed class, purebred cattle will show in crossbred class. Or, in an All Other Breed class if there are three or more various purebred cattle that lack the numbers to form their own breed show. 5. All out-of state cattle will require health papers. 6. Heifers must be born after September 1, 2006. 7. All cattle will be shown by hip height unless a breed class is formed. 8. Class order: Country Born and Raised, Feeders, Heifers, and Steers. 9. Saturday July 12, 2008 - 1:00 PM Show held in Jr Fair Arena For the fifth year, the Madison County Born and Raised Class has been added to the 2008 Beef Open Show. The object is to recognize county youth for producing quality market and breeding projects. There is no charge for these classes, however participants need to register in the senior fair office by Saturday, July 5, 2008. This will be the first class during the Open Class Beef Show on Saturday, July 12, 2008 beginning at 1 pm. An overall Champion Born and Raised Market Beef Animal, Champion Born and Raised Heifer, and Champion Born and Raised Feeder Calf will be selected. Various awards will be given to participants. This continues to be a pilot program and hopefully this program will grow in future years. Future input and changes are welcomed. Rules: 1. All animals must be current 4-H or FFA projects entered at this year's fair and the animal must have been born and raised in Madison County. If you bought the animal from a breeder within Madison County and raised it, the animal is eligible for the show. 2. Classes will be determined by show management.
